Description:

The U.S. National Zoo, located in Washington, D.C., is supported by the federal government and administered by the Smithsonian Institution. It has the largest collection of small mammals of any American zoo; one of the finest collections of elephants, bears, and reptiles; a pair of giant pandas, presented by the People's Republic of China in 1972; and rare Sumatran tigers and the best part: Admission is free.

You need to allot yourself at least five hours to see all of the animals and exhibits at the National Zoo. My suggestion: use the portable maps you receive at the entrance; otherwise you are likely to miss some of the most popular attractions. Among some of the favorites are the giant pandas, other bears, lions, giraffes, tigers, monkeys, sea lions, and one of the rarest animals in the world: The King Cheetah. The new addition to the Zoo is believed to be only one of 20-30 of this type of animal that exists and the only one in Australia. At just nine-months-old this cub is one of only two that can be handled. Although it is the same species as a normal Cheetah, a recessive gene gives it a unique appearance. Instead of the normal spots it has four stripes down its back with longer fur along these stripes making it stand out among its other cat counterparts.

My husband and I visited the zoo with our 5 and 8 year old daughters. We all really enjoyed the trip.
The bird house was very interesting, it includes two seperate free range bird areas (and is a great place to cool off on hot days!) We also enjoyed amazonia, elephants and ocean living.
Note when we were there 7/2006 the panda area was under construction and the lines to see the pandas where quite long, we chose not to wait.
I would recommend printing out a map before you go, we were not able to find any printed maps as we were walking around, only the billboard ones. Maps can be printed at:

The zoo recommends visitors arrive before 10am or after 2pm to avoid crowds, we arrived at about 2:30pm and found easy parking.
The zoo recommends three hours to visit, I would say that is a minimum and to expect more like 4.
