Description:

Bitssy is too scared to go outside because the Caramel monster will murder her family. On her first bold venture into the world out front, the monster seizes Bitssy and a dreadful end-of-the-line war erupts. Defeated, and in her final heartbreaking moments, Bitssy heeds a haunting echo to take her body wherever she wants without fear of being hurt. Drawing heavily upon her inborn wildness, Bitssy calls up a deep forgotten power and battles like her wise Dingo ancestors would have done. Not impressed, Caramel tries to unsuccessfully trick Bitssy’s family into keeping her trapped. When Bitssy frees herself from the jaws of deception and the coat of trickery, it is Caramel who becomes jarred by her own sour sugar coating and is carted away. Bitssy and her dying mother, finally sample a different flavour: the sweet life that was fed to them by Bitss of Caramel Marmalade on Toast.
A BEAUTIFUL, 112 page, A5 sized, junior fiction chapter book about a cheeky, freedom fighting feral cat and his unlikely best buddy: a victorious and gentle tapestry red dingo cross. Each chapter has its own illustration heading, drawn especially to engage children in the story by using the familiarity of domestic pets. This is a "please read another chapter Mum" book and is guaranteed to engage boys, and girls, in reading. Most importantly, the book acts to unobtrusively teach our children the protective behaviour element of body ownership and safety – that we all have the right to feel safe all of the time and to go where we want without fear of being hurt and controlled by bullies. The story achieves this WITHOUT making any mention of abuse or protective behaviours.
Aimed at middle readers, but no matter what your age, child, adult or grand parent, you deserve to have this first protective behaviour Australian book in a series of five. Be one of the lucky first to own this sensitive piece of quality literature before it hits book stores around Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Every parent concerned with protecting their children will want one.
Written by Australian personal safety author, protective behaviour resource designer, child therapist, social worker and mother of four, Megan Bayliss, this release is her first children’s chapter book. The story is one of achievement and safety, where Marmalade (a freedom fighting feral cat) and his victorious canine buddy, Bitssy, battle monsters to reclaim the world out front. Set in tropical Australia, the book is embedded with interesting Australian nuances that can act to keep all children safe.
The book has been endorsed by Dr Denise Lievore, ex Australian Institute of Criminology and now senior research fellow at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. This is what has been said by Denise, editors, and other test readers:
“I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It's marvellously evocative of the wonders and charms of a tropical backyard and street, as well as the important events and lessons that take place there. Bitssy and Marmalade capture children's playfulness, fears, sense of fun and inquisitiveness in a way that is both charming and believable. This is an enjoyable and educational book for both children and adults.”
Dr Denise Lievore, Senior Research Fellow, Victoria University of Wellington
